With the Mango Two mission, Spire seeks to test a new ISL payload manufactured by Jacobs.

Description

The Mango Two mission will consist of two 3U (6kg) LEMUR-class satellites operating on all standard Spire frequencies and communicating with the Spire ground network.

Each satellite will also be equipped with a new ISL payload, consisting of a software-defined radio (“SDR”) and deployable antennae that transmits and receives (space-to-space) at 2440 MHz using a 70 kHz channel.

The ISL payloads onboard the Mango Two satellites will also communicate with an additional ground station, located in Tucson, Arizona, at the 8200 MHz (space-to-Earth), and 9432 MHz and 9450 MHz (Earth-to-space) center frequencies.

The Mango Two mission seeks to build on the operational success of the Mango One mission, which evaluated antenna patterns and pointing control algorithms for a wide-band phased array antenna with a single satellite.

The Mango Two mission will:

  1. conduct real-world algorithm testing and demonstration for geolocation, ISLs, and communications utilizing time difference of arrival (“TDOA”) and frequency difference of arrival (“FDOA”) to measure and compare the arrival time and doppler effect of signals from the ground received by the Mango Two payloads;
  2. test the ability to establish and maintain communications between an SDR and ground station (Tucson) where the same radios are being used for ISLs;
  3. test the capability of the SDR to communicate between satellites, while simultaneously conducting geolocation, data, and TT&C operations; and
  4. conduct general in-orbit testing of geolocation and satellite crosslinks for potential use in open architecture and third-party development projects.
