Educational and capacity building mission while demonstrating new commercial space business models.

Description

Together with businesses and actors in the Kvarken region, the centre will be designing, developing and launching into space its own small satellite in a few years with the support of Aalto University and Luleå University of Technology.

The payload of KvarkenSat will be designed together with the stakeholders of the project, and it will demonstrate the technological possibilities of the new, commercial space business. The additional plan is to install a ground station antenna for satellite data reception on the roof of the University of Vaasa's science library Tritonia.
Since the main topics of interest in the Kvarken area are forestry and sea transportation, the KvarkenSat will integrate a mutli-spectral camera for forest health and seawater quality analysis and an AIS receiver for vessel tracking.

In addition, the spacecraft will perform the in-orbit demonstration of a miniature water-based resistojet thruster system as well as atmospheric radio signal studies via a Galileo capable satellite navigation receiver.
