Australian ride-share satellite so that industry and researchers can use to test and prove the functionality of their tech.

Description

Funded by the NSW government, Waratah Seed is a pilot space qualification project to launch NSW-developed space technology into orbit to test and prove functionality. The project is focused on developing the NSW space sector in particular, and the Australian space industry as a whole.

Having won joint 1st prize in the Waratah Seed WS-1 Payload Competition, Spiral Blue has been awarded a ride-share slot for our edge computer, Space Edge-1 (SE-1) on board a 6U CubeSat, launching late 2023.

Designed by EurokaPower, the University of Sydney Space Solar Cell Research Team, and led by Anita Ho-Baillie, Laura Granados, Tiaan Stals, Arafat Mahmud, Shi Tang, David McKenzie, and Iver Cairns, the PORT-2 payload seeks to further demonstrate the capabilities of perovskite new solar cell designs in extra-terrestrial environments. This mission will pave the way for accessible high-performance space-grade solar cells.

Results

The Waratah Seed-1 mission will extend operations, surpassing expectations after operating in space for 6 months as of Monday 17th February. Seven of the nine payloads on board are now operational and sending data back to Earth for analysis. Of the remaining two payloads, both are drawing current and one has generated a datafile onboard.
