Open source program and demonstrate tiny 3D printer in space.

Description

Creating an Open Prototype for Educational NanoSats (OPEN) is an open-hardware program combined with open source software to operate and communicate with the spacecraft. Test the capabilities of a 5 x 5 x 8 cm 3D printer in space. Used to determine how certain printing materials behave in microgravity and when exposed to the temperatures and radiation of low Earth orbit.

The Open Orbiter spacecraft will serve as a testing and demonstration platform for the OPEN framework, demonstrating its capabilities and space qualifying it. The designs use low-cost commercial off-the-shelf parts and easily-to-fabricate printed circuit boards that can be made using the budget of $5,000 in parts for a basic spacecraft.
